Established on 3 May 1919, Eesti Pank (the central bank of Estonia) is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. The main task it was charged with at the time was organising the circulation of currency in the country. To this day, a century later, it continues to guarantee the quality of the cash in circulation and to do everything it can to maintain the value of money, but now it does so in cooperation with other European central banks. The Estonian economy and its financial affairs have changed a great deal in the last 100 years, as have the duties of Eesti Pank. Today it strives to ensure that banks and payments run smoothly; it compiles statistics; it analyses the national economy; and it advises the government. Eesti Pank does all of this so that Estonia continues to enjoy and benefit from a safe, healthy economic environment in which people are able to make their dreams come true.
