Description

European Capitals of Culture are European cities selected by the European Commission which showcase their historical heritage and modern cultural life during a year. On the initiative of Greek Minister of Culture, Melina Mercouri, Athens was declared the first ‘European City of Culture’ in 1985 to showcase the wealth of European culture and bring Europeans closer together. Almost 70 cities have now been awarded the honour. In 2024, along with Tartu and Southern Estonia, Capitals of Culture are also Bodø in Norway and Bad Ischl in Austria.

European Capital of Culture Tartu 2024 is Estonia’s main event and the largest joint venture between Tartu and Southern Estonia. Throughout the year, a programme of over 1,000 different events tells the story of the Arts of Survival, reaching people of all ages. The Arts of Survival are the knowledge, skills, and values that will help us lead a better life in the future. As a united community, we wish to share this knowledge and also learn from others. This is how we create a better tomorrow, inspired by culture.
