Description

St. John’s Church in Viljandi was built between 1466 and 1472 together with the Franciscan monastery, which was located north of the church. The Franciscans idealised austerity and simplicity, which is why St. John’s Church also employs the charm of simplicity. The history of the church has been turbulent, and yet, the sanctuary has survived to this day, much to the delight of the people of Viljandi.

St. John’s Church can be called a building that rings, because as a novel solution, a carillon consisting of 25 bells has been installed in the steeple to play any melody. Over the years and decades, the church has hosted many concerts and festivals. Many Estonians know St. John’s Church as the folk festival church –, during the folk music festival, it is open until the late hours of the evening.
