Estonian Association of University Women 100

The century-long history of the Estonian Association of University Women is part of Estonia’s educational, scientific, and societal development. Founded in Tartu in 1926, the Association emerged from the conviction that the knowledge, determination, and responsibility of educated women enrich not only the academic world but society as a whole. Over the decades, EAUW has supported women’s higher education, upheld the ideals of professional ethics and academic freedom, and strengthened connections among academic women both in Estonia and internationally. Estonian female scientists have opened new perspectives, advanced knowledge, and contributed to shaping a knowledge-based Estonia. This path has required dedication, perseverance, and a willingness to take responsibility, even when facing societal expectations or personal choices. The 100th anniversary stamp of EAUW is a tribute to all Estonian women who, through their work and intellect, have kept alive the light of education, science, and intellectual independence. One of the symbols depicted on the stamp, an ancient oil lamp, reflects this enduring light.
