Estonian apple Veiniõun & codling moth

Did you know that the apple is one of the most widely consumed fruits in the world, with an estimated 7,500 varieties? One of them, the Estonian apple cultivar Veiniõun (Malus domestica ‘Veiniõun’), was bred by Uno Kivistik, and the original tree grows in Roogoja farm, Karla village, Harjumaa. The tree is medium-sized with a spreading crown, and its leaves and branches are red. It usually begins fruiting in the fourth or fifth year after planting, producing a good yield. Young tree trunks need protection from spring and winter temperature fluctuations. The variety has satisfactory resistance to scab. The fruits are medium to large, round-conical, and entirely red, with burgundy-colored, juicy, sweet-and-sour flesh. The codling moth (Cydia pomonella) is one of the most common pests of apple trees in Estonia. Adult insects lay eggs on apples or young fruits, from which larvae emerge and feed inside the fruit, creating holes and damaging the seeds. Infested fruits are inedible and often fall from the tree prematurely. The larvae burrow into fruits, contaminating them and disrupting development. This pest can be particularly severe under intensive cultivation or warmer growing periods.
