On 1 January 2002 the common currency of the European Union, the euro, became legal tender in twelve European Union countries. On 1 January 2011 the euro was taken into use also in Estonia and the postage stamp issued to mark the event was the first Estonian euro-only stamp with the symbolical face value of €1. This time reproductions of two euro coins are featured in the design of the stamp.
