Description

Tallinn Zoo, member of WAZA, the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums, this year marks its 75th anniversary and shows to its visitors a collection that has a number of species we do not very often see in other zoos. The wild goats and mountain sheep exhibit, for example, has the biggest number of species in the world. Besides, it is worthwhile to mention several species in the danger of extinction, particularly eagles, vultures, cranes and big cats, and their propagation in the framework of respective internationally coordinated programs. In the past quarter of the century the focus has been centred on the study of an extremely rare species, the European mink, and, by means of as up to date methods as possible, creation of a new natural habitat on the basis of a new natural habitat on Hiiumaa and its monitoring. The Amur leopard, Panthera pardus orientalis and the bearded vulture, Gypaetus barbatus, that have been reproduced in the souvenir sheet, are some of the important objects of protection of species.
